One call, two Review Fellowships: Applications are now open!

Behind every published paper are reviewers who helped shape it. Join us for an exclusive look into the world of the peer-review process at two of Europe’s leading radiology journals. Discover what makes a great reviewer, sharpen your critical appraisal skills, and gain practical insights to help you leave your own mark on the next paper you review.

The ESR Journals Review Fellowships 2027 are now open for applications!

This year, for the first time, European Radiology and Insights into Imaging are joining forces for a joint call, offering two parallel fellowships – the Yves Menu Review Fellowship in European Radiology and the Insights into Imaging Review Fellowship. All applicants will be considered for a place in both fellowships.

Selected candidates will undergo a remote training programme designed to shape the next generation of expert reviewers, whether you’re just starting to build your academic profile or looking to deepen your experience.

The fellows will begin their journey at an in-person introductory meeting led by the Chief Editor of the ESR Journals and Editor-in-Chief of European Radiology, Prof. Bernd Hamm, and the Editor-in-Chief of Insights into Imaging, Prof. Paola Clauser, at ECR 2027, where, together with the Deputy Editors of both journals, the tasks and assignments will be explained.

Under the guidance of our Deputy Editors, the fellows will contribute to the peer-review process for selected manuscripts. Every review will be carefully assessed by their supervising editor, ensuring high-quality feedback and continuous learning.

About the journals

European Radiology is focused on advancing scientific knowledge through impactful, novel research and technical innovations – original articles, guidelines, and meta-analyses, with a preference for prospective randomised trials, AI, and radiomics. European Radiology will be a great fit for candidates interested in clinical research.

Insights into Imaging is focused on translating current knowledge and emerging techniques into everyday clinical practice – critical reviews, protocols, and practice-oriented articles, alongside topics like workforce issues, DEI, and radiation protection. This makes Insights into Imaging a better fit for applicants with an educational or practice-improvement focus.

Applicants will be asked to rank their fellowship preference (1st and 2nd choice) as part of their application. We will do our best to honour applicants’ first choice; however, final placement will be allocated by the editorial team based on the candidates’ interests, expertise, and overall fit.

Eligibility

Candidates must:

  • Be a certified radiologist or radiology resident
  • Be an active member of the European Society of Radiology
  • Provide evidence of research and clinical activity in the field of Radiology

Candidates still in training are especially encouraged to apply.

Benefits

The fellows will become familiar with manuscript handling, methods for analysing scientific papers, and criteria for editorial decisions (accept, revise, reject, decline).

At the end of the fellowship period, the fellows will receive a certificate and have a chance to become permanent reviewers for the journals, should they be interested.

The selected fellows will receive free ECR 2027 registration.

Application

Applications must include the following as PDF files:

  • Completed questionnaire (ranking fellowship preference as 1st and 2nd choice)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Motivation letter (mentioning preferred fellowship and subspecialties, if any)
  • Reference letter from a referee who is an active ESR member

Applicants must send all their documents together via email to [email protected].
